Prior to earning my MFA in 2013 I earned a BSN in nursing and have been a practicing psychiatric nurse since 2004. Although I work limited hours now as a per diem and dedicated the majority of time to painting I have worked in the hospital setting throughout the pandemic. Thankfully I do not work in the ICU or ED or anywhere I would consider front of the lines. But- I do think I can empathize with those who do. This body of work aspires to honor my fellow nurses. Especially now, during the pandemic, I see nothing more important or worthwhile than to make work that honors the spirit, courage and the heart of the nurse. I’ve asked nurses to voluntarily send me their photo and some writing about what it has been like to be a nurse during this time. I hope to exhibit all of these portraits as well as the words of these nurses in a tribute and recognition of their service. If you or someone you know is a nurse and wants to participate please email me at Vanessa_michalak@yahoo.com.
